Practical & Applied Simulation Examples (EMC Test Models, PDN Analysis, PCB design Rule Checker)

In this presentation given at Detroit & Chicago EMC Mini-Symposiums Scott Mee, Owner of E3 Compliance and EMC Specialist, discusses:

  • EMC simulation

  • EMC PDN analysis

  • PCB design rule checking

Our Simulation Philosophy

  • E3 is an independent engineering consulting group

  • We focus on EMC & high-speed design, simulation, pre- compliance testing & diagnostics

  • We use simulation tools to complement our engineering and testing to improve product designs

  • We use simulation to:

    • make better design decisions

    • reduce EMC test issues

    • solve EMC issues faster

    • Understand the physics

  • We don’t use simulation to completely replace good engineering practices or lab testing (all are essential)

Optimized Modeling Approach

  • We use an optimized modeling approach

  • What does this mean?

  • Optimized modeling is an approach that prioritizes overall project benefit over pure accuracy of the simulation model

    • Not enough time & effort → faster, but less accuracy

    • Too much time & effort → very accurate, but too long & high cost

  • We also perform correlation studies to improve accuracy
