Medical Device EMC Testing

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Pre-Compliance Testing for Medical Devices

We perform EMC pre-compliance testing to help our medical device customers identify potential EMC issues. We do this in a cost effective way by focusing on risk areas and quickly fixing issues that we find during electromagnetic compatibility testing. It takes less time and costs less than a traditional compliance test phase, which saves our medical device customers time and money with our process.

EMC is challenging to address in the medical device industry because there are a number of limitations on what can be implemented from a design standpoint. Electrical grid requirements, patient and personnel safety, size, cost and reliability are some of the many requirements that drive limitations on EMC controls. Most medical devices need to go through a stringent set of EMC tests to be premarket or market certified. There are also agency and regulator approvals needed.

We’ve worked on surgical tools, wearable medical devices, hospital beds (power, motors, actuators, patient monitoring, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc..), carts (for patient monitoring, laptops/IT infrastructure), cameras, patient data consoles and other medical devices.

Key facts about our medical device EMC pre-compliance testing process:

  1. We discover medical device EMC issues quickly

  2. We find the root cause by understanding the physics and fix electromagnetic compatibility issues within the same EMC test phase

  3. We perform over-testing to ensure sufficient design margin and confirm improvements

  4. Our medical device customers move forward confidently into their EMC compliance test phase

  5. By focusing on the risk areas and performing medical device EMC testing in a shorter time-frame our customers often save at least one product design iteration.

  6. As EMC issues are identified we have a full line-up of EMC troubleshooting tools to locate the source of the failure.  In addition to our EMC tools we have a large number of component kits in house to prototype solutions and retest quickly.
