We use EMC Pre-compliance testing as a means to determine a product’s margin to meeting EMC requirements. Our objective is to create and execute a test plan that represents how a product will perform in the compliance test lab and in its intended application in the field. One example of a tool we use to locate sources of RF Emissions is an EMC near-field scanner. The near-field scanner systematically scans over the PCB with an RF probe and collects and reports the field data with an image overlay. An automated report generation feature allows the engineers to collectively interpret the results and identify a solution.
One of our clients requested pre-compliance testing on an office furniture electronic product. The product was equipped with high power electronics and RF interface. Their goal was to perform a pre-screen for radiated and conducted emissions prior to updating their design and going through compliance testing. During our testing, we identified several peaks above the FCC radiated limit. We then applied our custom set of diagnostic tools to locate the root cause and found several ways to improve the noise levels. After modifying and testing several samples with the improvements the results showed a sufficient margin to the required limit. The client came away from the testing confident about how to proceed with the pre-production design release and subsequent compliance testing.
